Hong Kong, Jany. 3.

I have the honour

to acknowledge

receipt of your letter of the date

addressed to me

of 4th inst.,

conjointly with the said Rebate and Shuck, on the subject of certain locations transferred from Capt. Meik to Mr. Webster and myself.

In reply I beg to say,

that the whole of transaction was conducted under the direct sanction

of the Govt., formally and officially given in a letter

from A. K. Johnston Esqre., addressed to Mishock of date 26th October ultimus, in virtue of which regular transfer was made at the Land Office, and on the faith of which the purchase money was paid.

Our title to the land, therefore is not

of subject

to any change or non-implement of the terms of the grant, on the part of Govt., which has at this stage been brought forward; but is based on the good faith of the Govt. of the Island, which after one investigation, made over

the property to

us, and which has subsequently, during the progress of our

operations
